Why is H.E.A.R.T. important to the parents of adults with developmental disabilities?

High school graduation is different for the parent of a child with developmental disabilities than it is for other parents. Most parents are deeply involved in helping their graduates fill out college applications or look for the right job. Both parent and child are focused on the future.

For the parent of an adult child with developmental disabilities, it quickly becomes apparent that choices are much more limited. And none of them are good. These parents really have only three choices:

  • Enroll the child in an adult daycare facility
  • Have a parent or other family member become a stay-at-home caretaker
  • Leave the child at home alone
For parents who have done the very best they can for their children through high school, and who are facing a future which will demand ongoing care for these grown children, these are not acceptable choices. That is where the H.E.A.R.T. Program can help, by making it possible for these now-adult individuals to continue learning and one day be able to go home and say, “I have a job!”
